Code to Change!
For CEL Kids Hackathon 2020, a coding event for kids in Grade 5-9 to showcase their coding talent signed to UN’s SDG, we wanted our Teach For India (Ahmedabad) schools and kids to participate and learn to code.
We partnered with Riverside School where Riverside kids, or teaching buddies, came and taught in our schools. Teaching buddies on hearing that other kids wanted to learn coding and needed someone to teach them took up the challenge to teach on weekends for 3 months and prepare them for hackathons . Their parents were also on board, along with the Riverside school.
The first class happened recently and it was awesome! Kids enjoyed a lot and started working on computers which, earlier, were kept closed in a room. I believe that this skill of coding and creating on a computer to express and solve problems would bring in so much confidence in our kids. Around 100 kids will get a chance to code this year from Teach For India schools only and many more throughout India. We received messages from fellows and principals that they were so happy that their kids got this rare opportunity.
