Learnings from Ahmedabad Regional Summit

Theme: Opportunities come calling
Description: Come experience an ideal world where collaboration, free expression and equal education are the norm! From creating experiences, hosting coding workshops to sharing leadership stories and performing theatre, kids prove that they can do it all.

The KER Ahmedabad Regional Summit was truly a reiteration and confirmation of our belief in what we do and why we do it. Space was brought to life with a diverse group of kids and adults bringing their unique perspectives to the table and learning from each other in a safe and comfortable environment. Here are some our key learnings from this summit:

  • KER serves as a platform and lens shift.

KER wasn’t just about fostering student leadership or student potential. It was a platform which brought diverse people together to inspire and learn from each other’s journey. It was about adults seeing and hearing what is already inside our kids. There was immense potential in each and every kid who came to the Summit.

  • Students think integration is important and powerful.

A lot of the workshops and stalls we saw were an application of what the students have been learning in their classrooms which really didn’t need any extra preparation. Kids were facilitating art workshops around surrealism which they learned in one of their lessons, they had put up stalls with crystal artwork which they experimented within one of their science lessons, they spoke about the value of community sharing circles which they conduct after school hours, and so much more! Almost all the kids also spoke about the relevance and importance of values as a part of an excellent education, that how the purpose of education is to become better human beings.

  • That diversity of experiences and students pushes our exposure and ability to collaborate.

The Amdavad Regional Summit had many different experiences around the 4 themes which the student committee came up with:

  1. Leadership and Collaboration: Kids facilitated design thinking workshops on bullying, hosted a coding talk show and workshop (how to use technology for communication), and facilitated workshops around having healthy body and mind through yoga and mindfulness.
  2. Community: Kids shared stories of leaders from the community they had been working with, and performed a really powerful nukkad natak (street theatre) on traffic awareness – a problem very common in Ahmedabad.
  3. Expression and Passion: Kids facilitated forum theatre workshops and workshops around using arts as a medium of expression.
  4. Education to All: Kids facilitated workshops around discrimination, what education could be, and much more.

What was truly wonderful to see in addition to the variety and diversity of experiences at this summit was the diversity of kids, too.

There were kids present from all walks of life interacting with each other and learning from each other.

  • That a safe space is essential in building students’ potential.

The way the kids were operating at the Summit had a lot to do with space/environment they were in. It was a very safe and warm space, with no pressure or high expectations. The kids were talking in a language they were most comfortable in with no adult telling them that you have to talk “like this” or behave “like that”.

It was about adults creating an enabling environment for them – an environment of pure belief, faith, and encouragement, and then just getting out of their way and letting them change the world.

And don’t forget to check out what we learned from our Pune, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai Regional Summits too!
